Overview
Dartbrook Colliery is an underground coal mine located just a few kilometres from Muswellbrook. After an 18-year hiatus, the mine is set to restart operations, bringing significant employment opportunities for tradespersons, suppliers, and local manufacturers. As the mine prepares to reopen, there is an urgent need for effective personal storage solutions to accommodate both administrative staff and workers in the mine.
Design and Consultation Process
With the mine’s revitalization, Dartbrook Colliery reached out to Actiwork to address the specific storage needs for both office and underground personnel. Given the presence of existing lockers from the previous operations, there was a requirement to match these for a consistent and professional appearance.
Needs Assessment
The Actiwork process began with a meticulous assessment of the storage needs for the employees at Dartbrook Colliery. Key steps included:
Evaluating Current Lockers: Actiwork’s team assessed the existing lockers, focusing on materials, dimensions, and design. This evaluation was crucial to ensure that the new lockers would complement the old ones while enhancing functionality.
Gathering Feedback: Collaboration with key stakeholders and employees was essential to gather insights on preferences and needs. Feedback highlighted the necessity for additional features, such as:
- External towel hooks for convenience.
- Traffolyte number labels for easy identification.
- Stainless locking mechanisms for added security.
- Aluminium bench seating to facilitate easy changing and handling of footwear.
Tailored Design Development
Once the requirements were clearly defined, Actiwork developed a detailed plan for the procurement, installation, and integration of the new lockers. This involved:
- Quality Control Measures: Ensuring that the new lockers met Dartbrook’s standards for quality and durability.
- Space Optimisation: The design aimed to maximise storage while contributing to a clean, safe, and organised workspace environment.
- Full Induction: For site access and installation.
Actiwork’s design process reflected a commitment to enhancing the overall functionality and aesthetics of the bathhouse locker room at Dartbrook Colliery. The mine’s management prioritised the design and functionality of personal storage spaces to foster a supportive workplace environment, setting a new standard for organisation and efficiency in the mining industry.

- PC Matching: The lockers were designed to visually match existing units, maintaining a professional look across the facility.
- Aluminium Bench Seating: Each locker area included bench seating, allowing for easy changing and footwear handling.
Project Outcomes
Actiwork’s meticulous attention to detail and commitment to quality resulted in a successful project that met Dartbrook Colliery’s needs while enhancing the functionality and aesthetics of the locker room. The new storage solutions not only provided practical benefits but also contributed to a more organised and welcoming environment for the mine’s workforce.
